About us
What is Sure Start?

Sure Start is a Government programme that works with parents, carers and under five year old children to give children the best start in life. This is achieved through a wide range of new or improved services in childcare, early education, special needs, health, family support, parent training and employment.

The Sure Start vision
Better quality services for all children. All three and four year olds will be entitled to free early education by April 2004. We are raising the quality of early education through the Foundation Stage so children's learning and social and emotional development will be enhanced and they are all equipped to enjoy learning whatever their background or circumstances.

More accessible childcare for families who need it. We are linking early education with more high quality, accessible and affordable childcare services in every neighbourhood to benefit children and enable parents to balance work and family life. Government is providing significant help with the cost of childcare for those least able to afford it.

Reshaping children's services because every child matters. We are creating children's centres, building on the success of existing integrated provision, to bring together good quality early education, childcare, health and family support, starting in the 20% most disadvantaged areas, where they are needed most to reduce inequality and tackle child poverty.

Have Your Say
Sure Start is parent led with their ideas and needs shaping the services for their community. Several parent groups have been set up and a Partnership Board consisting of representatives from local children’s and community services and parents and local residents oversees Sure Start local programmes.
Go to Have Your Say to tell us which services you think we should be running for parents and under 5 ’s and tell us your ideas.

What is a Childrens Centre?
We have created or funded a wide range of new services for parent, carers and under four year old’s.

We have created more childcare places at Sure Starters Nursery, creche and respite sessions, supported childminders and given small grants, funded children’s childcare and holiday schemes.

We have set up and supported a range of play and learning groups that support social and emotional development and health and safety issues.

We have a health visitor, midwife, speech and language therapists and special needs workers working with Sure Start Alumwell Pleck families and creating groups and sessions to improve heath and development services. We also have a family support team and run parent groups, training, courses, advice sessions and career development to help and support the whole family.

Most of our services are free or have a small charge to cover refreshments and activity materials.
